2014 Best Picture Oscar nominations
Starring Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper and Amy Adams, this exciting comedy-drama crime thriller (covering all genres) has been loved by critics and audiences across the globe. This movie has been nominated for an incredible 10 nominations so it must be pretty good, right? Here ’tis!
Tom Hanks leads the charge in this dramatic movie based on an incredible true story about a captain (der) whose large ship tanker thing is hijacked by pirates. The captain is taken hostage and high drama on the high seas ensues. Exciting stuff. Unfortunately Hanks missed out on a nomination this year but his performance was pretty darn good. Check it out.
Dallas Buyers Club
Haven’t heard of this one? Me neither. It stars Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner so it must be pretty decent, right? It’s based on the true story of an AIDS sufferer who became a drug smuggler to help him with his illness. McConaughey is up for Best Actor for this dramatic role! Can’t wait to see it.
Nominated for an amazing 10 nominations, Gravity is the film to watch… literally. If you haven’t heard of it or seen it yet, it stars one of my favourite actresses, Sandra Bullock and my all-time fave actor, George Clooney as astronauts stuck in space trying to get home! Very, very tense. Here’s the trailer…
This is another mulit-genre film covering science fiction, romance, comedy and drama! It’s a quirky number starring the equally quirky Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams (once again – what a year she’s having) and Scarlett Johansson. A fella starts a relationship with the voice on his computer – topical and different. Check it out.
Party Food #2
Finger food is a must at your Oscars party because you don’t want to get messy sauces on your best frock/suit, right? Make these… Smoked Salmon crostini with cucumber and pear pickle recipe from Taste.com.au .
Another comedy-drama! Love them… a bit of heart with a slight chuckle. Bruce Dern stars as an old alcoholic fella caught up in a scam. He travels from Montana to Nebraska with his estranged son to claim a huge prize in a Marketing Sweepstakes. This is a story about a son trying to get to know his troubled father, told with humour. Sound good?
Get your tissues ready! This one’s a tear-jerker. The incredible Judi Dench stars as the protagonist searching for 50 long years for the son she was forced to give away when he was born. A journalist helps her on her quest and that’s where I’ll leave it. You must see this one!
12 Years a Slave
I love true stories and by the looks of it, so does the Academy. This one is based on a memoir of a free man who, in 1841 was kidnapped and sold into slavery. He was taken to Louisiana where he worked on plantations. This is his story…
The Wolf of Wall Street
Leonardo DiCaprio is back in another amazing movie. He stars as a stock broker who gets all caught up in the glitz and glamour and money of Wall Street, getting involved in fraud and corruption without blinking an eye. It’s set in the 90s so it’s kinda relevant with a dark comedic feel that will keep your beady eyes glued to that screen. Enjoy!
Party Food #3:
And to finish off our Oscar menu, we’re going with something both salty and sweet. Just like Oscars night, there are bitter/sweet moments to savour, so yeah! Let’s eat! They’re Sweet and Salty Popcorn Balls from My Recipes. Too yummy.
